Outdoor furniture for the EU and UK must be safe, stable, durable in its intended environment, control chemical risks under REACH, and, where relevant, meet fire‑safety expectations for upholstered elements and cushions.
What counts as Outdoor furniture
Outdoor furniture includes garden dining sets, lounge and relaxation seating, balcony and terrace furniture, poolside loungers, public‑space benches, and outdoor storage with integrated seating. These products are designed for use and storage outdoors or in partially sheltered areas, so exposure to UV, rain, temperature changes, and sometimes chlorinated or coastal environments strongly influences material and finish choices.
Requirements differ between domestic gardens and balconies, contract hospitality terraces, educational campuses, and public‑space installations, where building, fire, and accessibility rules may also apply.
Core obligations include:
Determine if products are intended for domestic, camping, or contract use and identify all applicable EU/UK legislation, with GPSR/GPSR‑UK as the baseline plus REACH/UK REACH and any national fire or building requirements that may apply to specific settings.
Designing furniture so it remains stable, strong, and safe under foreseeable outdoor conditions—using relevant EN standards such as EN 581‑1/‑2/‑3 for seating and tables together with stability tests from EN 1022—and addressing hazards like collapse, tip‑over, pinching, entrapment, sharp edges, and corrosion of structural components.
Maintaining a technical file with risk assessments, drawings, bills of materials, weathering and corrosion considerations, structural and mechanical test reports, and material/chemical documentation (for example coatings and metal finishes) to demonstrate ongoing conformity.
Providing clear instructions covering assembly, anchoring or weighting, use on uneven ground, maximum loads, maintenance, and storage (for example advising winter storage or protection from prolonged moisture/UV) in languages appropriate to each market.
Ensuring labelling and traceability meet GPSR/GPSR‑UK expectations, with durable identification of the manufacturer or importer, product designation, and batch or serial number, plus any additional marks or warnings required by buyers or schemes for outdoor products.
